Successful Data Warehouse Redesign with Interim Managers

Background:

Our client, a major international bank based in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with over 200,000 employees, needed to overhaul its data warehouse to become a data-driven organization. This shift is critical for banks and financial institutions due to their reliance on accurate data for managing high transaction volumes and complex business models. The bank opted for Power BI for this task but faced a hiring freeze that prevented permanent staffing.

Approach:

Robert Walters provided two interim managers who revamped the data landscape for Germany and Austria. Both managers came from IT backgrounds with deep expertise in data warehousing and Power BI, complemented by specific knowledge of banking and insurance sectors.

Working closely with the Controlling and BI teams, the interim managers served as vital links, focusing on tool development to ensure the company could leverage data effectively post-project.

Why Interim Managers for Data Warehouse Redesign?

Redesigning a data warehouse demands specialized skills and adaptability, which interim managers excel in providing. They bring swift adaptation to new projects and efficient execution, embedding crucial knowledge within the company for sustained data utilization.

Outcome:

After two years, the project concluded successfully. Robert Walters' interim managers prepared the company for GoLive and trained staff on the new tool's usage.

Another advantage of interim management was their consistent on-site presence, ensuring reliable support unlike service providers where contacts often change.

Carolina Thomys, Senior Consultant in Interim Management at Robert Walters, highlights the importance of specialized expertise:

This case underscores the value of interim managers' specific skills.

Both managers had extensive banking experience and were data experts, key to executing this project efficiently. Their deep sector knowledge was pivotal to its success."
